note on homeoasthetics

6 = 0 was an exhibition that showed the attitude and the works of a bunch of 6 portuguese artists (Ivo, Fernando Brito, Pedro Portugal, Pedro Proença, Manuel Vieira e Xana) that used to work together in the beginning of the eighties under the denomination of Homeoasthetic Movement – the group was characterized by an assumed old-fashioned and consciously peripheric neo-neo-dadaist spirit, with lots of half-folkloric and fake-revolutionary manifestos, giving unending performances of bad-pop-music or cagean concerts to wash-machines and castagnols, making more or less oniric super 8 movies, publishing ugly ironic magazines and painting also super-large-scale paintings. The notion of Homeoasthetics, if there is such a thing, is an aesthetic of Complexity, which integrates the ambivalences and the incongruence of life, in a dynamic process that tends to a revolucionary/reaccionary equilibrium (what a hell is that?). 6 = 0 means that the universe is perhaps a square and that the sum of all the 6 members of the group annihilates the unity. Their theatrical and ironic way of behaving was not suitable to the very serious local art world, and great part of their works, photos and theoretical statements was not available before. In the opening of the show there was a war tank and authentic soldiers from the period of the Portuguese Revolution at the entrance of Serralves Foundation, megaphones screaming slogans and manifestos in the gardens, a big cow was barbecued, and so on.
